What it does

Banding (Any creatures with banding, and up to one without, can attack in a band. Bands are blocked as a group. If any creatures with banding you control are blocking or being blocked by a creature, you divide that creature's combat damage, not its controller, among any of the creatures it's being blocked by or is blocking.)

Benalia has a complex caste system that changes with the lunar year. No matter what the season, the only caste that cannot be attained by either heredity or money is that of the hero.

Provenance

Where it came from

The Benalish Hero was first printed in the Limited Edition Beta set, released in 1993 as the first mass-market expansion to the original Magic: The Gathering core set. Designed during the infancy of the trading card game, it represents the foundational aesthetic of the Dominaria setting, specifically the kingdom of Benalia. The artwork, credited to Dan Frazier, captures a classic fantasy knight motif, reflecting the game's early roots in traditional tabletop roleplaying influences and high-fantasy archetypes.

The card is notable for introducing the 'banding' mechanic, a complex combat ability that defined early white-aligned strategies. While the mechanic itself was eventually retired due to its intricate rules interactions, the Benalish Hero remains a significant piece of the game's history as one of the first creatures to utilize it. It is widely regarded by hobbyists as a quintessential example of early 1990s card design, balancing functional utility with the iconic, hand-painted illustrative style that characterized the game's debut era.
