Where it came from
Web was released in 1993 as part of the Limited Edition Beta set for Magic: The Gathering, the pioneering collectible card game created by Richard Garfield. As one of the earliest expansion sets, Beta was produced to address the rapid sell-out of the original Alpha release, featuring refined card templates and corrected rule text. The set represents a foundational period in hobby gaming, establishing the mechanics and artistic identity of what would become the world's most enduring trading card game.
The artwork for Web was created by Quinton Hoover, a prominent early illustrator for the game known for his distinctive, flowing style. The illustration depicts a creature caught in a sticky, entangling trap, serving as a literal representation of the card's function, which is to render flying creatures unable to attack or block. The design reflects the game's early emphasis on top-down design, where the mechanics were directly mirrored by the thematic imagery found on the card.
