Where it came from
Big Score was introduced as part of the Mystical Archive, a specialized subset of cards released within the 2021 Magic: The Gathering expansion, Strixhaven: School of Mages. The Archive was conceived as a thematic collection of iconic instant and sorcery spells from throughout the game's history, reimagined with unique, academic-inspired art styles that drew from the aesthetic of the Strixhaven university setting.
The card’s design reflects the set's focus on high-stakes magical academia, utilizing a distinct, ornate frame treatment that set it apart from standard cards in the expansion. The illustration, created by artist Dominik Mayer, employs a bold, stylized approach to capture the essence of a massive magical windfall, a visual direction that was widely praised for its evocative, painterly quality within the context of the set's scholarly theme.
