Where it came from
Abrade was originally printed in the Hour of Devastation set, but the version from the Strixhaven Mystical Archive was released in 2021 as part of a curated collection of powerful instants and sorceries from Magic: The Gathering history. These cards were included in Strixhaven booster packs with unique, plane-specific art styles designed to reflect the magical traditions of the Strixhaven university.
The art for this particular card was illustrated by Johannes Voss, who utilized the Archive's signature ornate, stained-glass-inspired aesthetic. The piece depicts the destructive essence of the spell within a frame evocative of the scholarly setting of the school. It was well-received by players for both its utility as a versatile removal spell and its distinct visual departure from the card's original Amonkhet-themed art.
