Where it came from
The Big Wheel card, numbered 679 in the Marvel Super Heroes Commander set, features a character created by Len Wein and Ross Andru, first appearing in The Amazing Spider-Man #183 in 1978. Designed as a literal giant mechanized wheel operated by the criminal Jackson Weele, the character was intended as a quintessential example of the bizarre, high-concept villains prevalent in late-1970s comics. Its inclusion in card sets often serves as a nod to the eccentric catalog of Spider-Man's rogues' gallery.
The Commander set itself was a collectible card series designed to highlight the vast array of heroes and villains within the Marvel Universe. The artwork on this specific card captures the character's unique, bulky aesthetic, emphasizing the visual absurdity of a villain piloting a singular, massive engine of destruction. While the character is frequently cited for its camp appeal, the card has become a staple for completionist collectors of the Marvel Super Heroes series, representing the whimsical breadth of the publisher's character designs.
