Where it came from
Birth of the Imperium was released in 2022 as part of the Warhammer 40,000 Commander deck series for Magic: The Gathering. This set marked a significant collaboration between Wizards of the Coast and Games Workshop, bringing the grimdark sci-fi aesthetic of the 41st millennium into the mechanical framework of the world's most popular trading card game. The card is featured within the 'Forces of the Imperium' deck, which focuses on the humans, soldiers, and zealous crusaders of the setting.
The card features an illustration by Campbell White, who was tasked with visualizing the rise of the Emperor of Mankind and his unification of Terra. The artwork captures the intense, monolithic scale of the period, emphasizing themes of triumph and the birth of a galactic regime. Upon release, the card and the associated deck were well-received by both Warhammer lore enthusiasts and Magic players for their thematic integration and the specific 'Saga' card type mechanics that simulate historical progression.
