What it does

At the beginning of your end step, if you control a creature, look at the top seven cards of your library. Then you may sacrifice a creature. If you do, you may put a creature card with mana value X or less from among those cards onto the battlefield, where X is 1 plus the sacrificed creature's mana value. Put the rest on the bottom of your library in a random order.

Provenance

Where it came from

Birthing Ritual was introduced in the 2024 set Modern Horizons 3, a product line specifically engineered to introduce powerful new cards directly into the Modern format of Magic: The Gathering. As a successor to the iconic card Birthing Pod, this enchantment was designed by Wizards of the Coast to offer a recurring, resource-efficient way for players to sacrifice creatures and tutor for replacements from their library, echoing the strategic depth of its predecessor while adapting to the faster pace of contemporary play.

The artwork for this card was created by artist L.J. Koh, who utilized a vivid, organic aesthetic to illustrate the cycle of life and sacrifice central to the card's function. The design emphasizes themes of growth and metamorphosis, visually representing the exchange of a smaller creature for a more formidable one. Upon its release, the card was received as a significant addition to green-aligned creature-based strategies, quickly becoming a staple for competitive players looking to maximize their board state consistency.
