What it does

At the beginning of your end step, if you control a creature, look at the top seven cards of your library. Then you may sacrifice a creature. If you do, you may put a creature card with mana value X or less from among those cards onto the battlefield, where X is 1 plus the sacrificed creature's mana value. Put the rest on the bottom of your library in a random order.

Provenance

Where it came from

Birthing Ritual was introduced in the 2024 expansion Modern Horizons 3, a set specifically designed to inject powerful, nostalgic mechanics directly into the Modern format of Magic: The Gathering. The card serves as a thematic and functional homage to Birthing Pod, an iconic card from the 2011 Scars of Mirrodin block that became infamous for enabling complex, recurring creature-based strategies. By reviving this effect as a lower-cost enchantment, the designers aimed to provide green-aligned decks with a streamlined way to sacrifice smaller creatures to fetch higher-cost threats from the library.

The card’s illustration was crafted by artist Campbell White, who utilized a vivid, organic aesthetic to capture the transformative nature of the spell. The imagery focuses on the visceral process of life-cycling, aligning with the set's broader goal of modernizing classic gameplay patterns. Upon its release, the card received significant attention from competitive players for its efficiency in decks capable of chaining creature abilities, solidifying its place as a modern staple that balances high-risk deck building with potent board state progression.
