Where it came from
Black Vise was originally released in the 1994 Alpha set as an artifact that punished players for holding too many cards in their hand. Designed by Richard Garfield, the card was a pivotal element of early competitive play, quickly gaining a reputation for its oppressive efficiency against control decks. Its inclusion in the 30th Anniversary Edition serves as a tribute to this foundational era of Magic: The Gathering, utilizing the classic Christopher Rush illustration that remains one of the most recognizable pieces of art in the game's history.
The 30th Anniversary Edition was produced in 2022 as a commemorative, non-tournament-legal celebration of the game's history. It features the iconic retro frame style that defined the mid-nineties aesthetic of the original sets. By reprinting cards like Black Vise with the original artwork and card frames, Wizards of the Coast sought to evoke the nostalgia of early collectible card gaming while providing a tangible link to the mechanics that initially established the game's strategic identity.
