Where it came from
Black Vise was originally introduced in the 1994 Alpha expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game, designed by Richard Garfield. It was conceived as a punishing artifact meant to penalize opponents for holding too many cards in their hand, quickly becoming a hallmark of early competitive play due to its efficiency in aggressive control decks. Its iconic original artwork by Christopher Rush established a lasting visual identity for the card, characterized by an imposing, iron-bound restraint device.
The 30th Anniversary Edition, released in 2022, serves as a celebratory reprint set designed to commemorate the history of the game. These cards are distinguished by a retro frame aesthetic and a commemorative back, intended specifically for collectors rather than tournament use. The inclusion of Black Vise in this set acknowledges its status as a foundational card that helped define the early strategic landscape of Magic during the mid-nineties.
