Where it came from
Black Vise was originally released in the 1994 Alpha expansion as a potent artifact designed to punish players for holding large hands of cards. As one of the earliest cards to introduce the 'punisher' mechanic, it became a cornerstone of early Magic: The Gathering competitive play, eventually leading to its restriction in various formats due to its capacity to stifle game development. Its presence in the Kaladesh Inventions series serves as a homage to this storied history, re-imagining the artifact within the ornate, steampunk-inspired aesthetic of the Kaladesh plane.
The Kaladesh Inventions iteration features art by Igor Kieryluk, who shifted the design away from the minimalist original to align with the intricate, golden filigree style characteristic of the set's Masterpiece series. These cards were distributed as ultra-rare chase cards within Kaladesh booster packs, intended to celebrate iconic artifacts from across the game's long history. The release was met with high praise from collectors for its distinctive frame design and foil-etched treatment, which distinguishes these inventions from standard card variants.
