Where it came from
Blight Herder was released as a promotional card for the Magic: The Gathering set Battle for Zendikar in 2015. It depicts a member of the Eldrazi, an ancient, extra-planar race of world-consuming entities central to the game's lore. The set marked a return to the plane of Zendikar, focusing on the global conflict between the plane's inhabitants and these cosmic threats.
The artwork for this version was illustrated by Jason Felix, who utilized a stark, alien aesthetic to emphasize the Eldrazi's unsettling physiology. In the game's competitive landscape, the card was notable for its ability to generate resource tokens, a mechanic that made it a flexible tool in midrange strategies during its time in the standard tournament rotation.
