Where it came from
Blight Herder was released as part of the Battle for Zendikar set in 2015, specifically appearing as a promotional card for the Prerelease events. The card features an Eldrazi creature, a central antagonist force in the Magic: The Gathering multiverse, representing the theme of the plane of Zendikar being physically warped and consumed by these otherworldly beings. Its design reflects the 'Ingest' and 'Processor' mechanics introduced in the set, which encouraged players to interact with their opponent's exiled cards.
The artwork for this particular version was executed by Jason Felix, an illustrator known for his work on several fantasy and science fiction properties. His depiction focuses on the grotesque, multi-limbed nature of the Eldrazi, emphasizing the creature's role as a herald of destruction. The card was generally well-received by players for its utility in limited formats, particularly for its ability to create Eldrazi Scion tokens, providing both board presence and mana acceleration.
