Where it came from
Blight Herder was released in 2015 as part of the Battle for Zendikar set for Magic: The Gathering. The card depicts the Eldrazi, a race of ancient, cosmic entities characterized by their alien physiology and devastating impact on the game's planar settings. This creature was designed as part of the set's mechanical focus on the 'ingest' keyword, representing the Eldrazi's ability to consume the mana and resources of the worlds they invade.
The art for the card was provided by Aleksi Briclot, a long-time contributor to the Magic: The Gathering visual identity. Briclot utilized his signature style to emphasize the horror and scale of the Eldrazi, focusing on the creature's asymmetrical anatomy and unsettling presence. Within the competitive community, the card was received as a functional tool for midrange decks, particularly those leveraging colorless mana costs, finding a niche in the eternal formats of the game due to its efficient mana-to-body ratio.
