Blighted Woodland

Blighted Woodland was first introduced in the Battle for Zendikar set in 2015, designed as a utility land that offers mana ramp at the expense of its own destruction. The card reflects the lore of Zendikar, a plane defined by its volatile, living landscape, where the land itself can be harnessed for power or consumed by the existential threat of the Eldrazi. Its mechanics are intended to provide mid-to-late game utility for decks that need to thin their libraries or fix their mana bases, acting as a flexible resource that bridges the gap between active land development and sacrifice-based strategies.

The version included in Commander 2017, marked with collector number 235, maintains the original illustration by Cliff Childs. Childs, a frequent contributor to the game's aesthetic, depicted the woodland in a state of decay, emphasizing the desolation wrought by the Eldrazi corruption. This printing serves as a functional reprint within the context of the Commander format, where such utility lands are prized for their ability to be included in any deck regardless of color identity. It remains a staple for players looking for affordable, reliable ramp options in slower, multiplayer-focused formats.
