Blighted Woodland

Blighted Woodland was first introduced as part of the Magic: The Gathering Commander 2018 expansion, released in August 2018. The card is a utility land designed to provide mana ramp to green-aligned decks in the multiplayer Commander format. Its mechanics reflect the game's broader design philosophy of offering lands that remain relevant in the late game by allowing players to sacrifice them to search for additional basic lands, effectively thinning the deck and accelerating mana production.

The artwork for this particular printing was illustrated by Eytan Zana, who leaned into the dark, decaying aesthetic often associated with corrupted environments in the Magic multiverse. Zana’s illustration emphasizes the eerie, withered nature of the woodland through desaturated tones and skeletal tree forms, aligning with the atmospheric storytelling expected of such setting-specific cards. Upon its release, it was noted by players as a flexible, budget-friendly inclusion for non-competitive Commander decks, valued for its simplicity and reliability.
