Blighted Woodland

Blighted Woodland was first introduced in the Battle for Zendikar set in 2015 as a utility land designed to provide mana acceleration in the mid-to-late game. The card features a sacrifice ability that allows players to search their library for two basic land cards and place them onto the battlefield tapped, representing the encroaching, corruptive influence of the Eldrazi on the landscape of Zendikar. Its inclusion in the Zendikar Rising Commander set reflects its continued utility in the Commander format, where ramp effects that sacrifice themselves to generate board advantage are highly valued.

The artwork for the card, illustrated by Cliff Childs, captures the desolate and twisted aesthetic characteristic of the Eldrazi corruption. Childs emphasized the juxtaposition between the remnants of natural woodland and the strange, crystalline distortions caused by the Eldrazi titans. The design received positive feedback for its functional role in green-aligned decks, serving as a reliable way to fix mana and thin the deck while maintaining a flavor profile that resonates with the broader narrative of the Zendikar plane.
