What it does

At the beginning of each player's first main phase, if this artifact is untapped, that player adds colorless mana for each artifact they control.

Provenance

Where it came from

Blinkmoth Urn was released as part of the Mirrodin expansion in 2003, a set that introduced the game's first fully artifact-themed world. Designed by Magic: The Gathering's R&D team, the card reflects the mechanical focus of the set, where players were encouraged to utilize artifacts to generate mana and trigger various synergies within the Mirrodin environment.

The card’s illustration was crafted by artist Christopher Rush, one of the most iconic figures in the game’s early history. Rush designed the Urn to visually align with the crystalline and metallic aesthetic of the plane of Mirrodin. While it was received by players as a niche utility card for specific artifact-heavy decks, it remains a notable example of the thematic world-building that defined the Mirrodin block.
