Provenance

Where it came from

The Moriok Scavenger was released in 2003 as part of the Mirrodin expansion, the first set in the artifact-themed Mirrodin block for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Set on a world composed entirely of metal, the expansion introduced a focus on artifact mechanics and a stark, industrial aesthetic. The card reflects the lore of the Moriok, a faction of humans residing on the plane who have undergone cybernetic alteration to survive the harsh, metallic environment.

The illustration was created by artist Arnie Swekel, who contributed extensively to the visual identity of the Mirrodin block. Swekel aimed to capture the desperate, scavenging nature of the Moriok through a gritty, biomechanical design that emphasizes their reliance on salvaging discarded materials. The card was received as a functional utility piece in limited play formats, noted primarily for its ability to retrieve fallen artifacts from the graveyard.
