Soul Foundry

Soul Foundry was released in the 2003 Magic: The Gathering expansion set Mirrodin. Designed by Wizards of the Coast as part of a block centered on a metallic, artifact-driven world, the card was intended to explore the mechanics of imprint, which allowed players to exile cards to gain recurring benefits based on the exiled card's characteristics. This mechanic was a core feature of the block's innovative focus on artifact synergy.

The card's evocative artwork was illustrated by Arnie Swekel, who captured the industrial and somewhat unsettling aesthetic of the plane of Mirrodin. The design aimed to convey the flavor of a machine capable of replicating the essence of other spells, fitting the set's theme of cold, mechanical efficiency. Upon its release, it became a notable interest for players who enjoyed engine-building strategies in casual formats like Commander and Cube, where its ability to generate repeated copies of creatures provided significant long-term value.
