Where it came from
Blitz Automaton was introduced in the 2022 Magic: The Gathering expansion, The Brothers' War. The set chronicles the pivotal conflict between the artificer brothers Urza and Mishra, exploring themes of industrial warfare and the deployment of massive mechanical constructs. Designed as a common-rarity artifact creature, the card reflects the aesthetic of the set's retro-futuristic, war-torn setting, emphasizing the relentless, modular nature of the armies produced by the warring factions.
The artwork, illustrated by artist Wisnu Tan, portrays the automaton as a utilitarian, mass-produced machine of war. Tan’s approach focuses on the cold, functional design of the construct, capturing the gritty atmosphere of the conflict through muted tones and harsh lines. Upon release, the card was widely utilized in Limited formats for its straightforward, aggressive playstyle, serving as a reliable thematic piece that encapsulates the set's focus on artifact-centric strategy.
