Where it came from
Myrel, Shield of Argive was released in the 2022 Magic: The Gathering set The Brothers' War, which focuses on the iconic conflict between the artificer brothers Urza and Mishra. This card represents a pivotal historical figure from the Argivian resistance, serving as a tactical leader during the brutal technological warfare that defined the era. Her design emphasizes the theme of organized military defense, reflecting her role as a protector of Argive's remnants against the encroaching mechanical horrors of the Phyrexian-aligned forces.
The card was illustrated by Johannes Voss, a long-time contributor to the game known for his expressive and emotive artistic style. Voss leaned into a design that highlights Myrel's command presence, portraying her with stoic, resolute imagery that aligns with her mechanical ability to fortify allies and prevent opponents from interacting during her combat phase. Upon release, the card became a highly regarded inclusion in various competitive and casual formats due to its potent combination of token generation and board protection.
