Where it came from
Admiral's Order was released in early 2018 as part of the Rivals of Ixalan set, specifically appearing as a promotional card for the set's Prerelease events. The card draws heavily from the set's overarching nautical and pirate-themed narrative, which centers on the search for the lost city of Orazca. Its design mechanic, which allows a player to cast the spell for a reduced cost if they control a pirate, was intended to incentivize tribal synergy during limited-format gameplay.
The artwork for this card was created by Bastien L. Deharme, who utilized a moody, high-contrast style to depict the authoritative presence of the Brazen Coalition. Within the competitive landscape of Magic: The Gathering, the card was viewed as a niche but effective counterspell, particularly favored in decks that could reliably trigger its secondary cost reduction. It remains a notable piece of the Rivals of Ixalan promo cycle, representing a specific era of aggressive, combat-focused control spells.
