Where it came from
Boil was originally printed as an uncommon card in the 1997 Tempest expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The card was designed as a potent countermeasure specifically for decks utilizing blue magic, a color notoriously dominant in the game's early competitive environment. Its inclusion in the 1998 World Championship Decks reflects its role as a calculated sideboard selection, intended to punish players who relied heavily on Islands by destroying them upon casting.
The 1998 World Championship Decks were issued as gold-bordered replicas of the sixty-card decks used by the top players at that year's world tournament. This specific copy, numbered bs165sb, replicates the version used by Brian Selden, the event's winner. These decks were produced to allow casual players to experience the high-level strategies of professional competition, featuring unique gold borders and card backs that distinguish them from standard-issue tournament cards.
