Counterspell was included in the 1998 World Championship Decks, a specialized product line released by Wizards of the Coast to celebrate the top-performing decks from the Magic: The Gathering World Championship. These preconstructed decks were exact physical replicas of those played by the professional finalists, complete with gold-bordered cards and unique backs that rendered them ineligible for tournament play. This specific card was featured in the deck of the player Ben Rubin, who placed second in the 1998 tournament, reflecting the high-level competitive strategies of the era.
