Where it came from
The Counterspell card from the 1998 World Championship Decks was issued as part of a commemorative boxed set designed to replicate the exact sixty-card decks used by the top players at the 1998 Magic: The Gathering World Championship. These decks were produced by Wizards of the Coast to allow fans to experience the high-level competitive strategies of the era. The cards themselves feature a distinctive gold-bordered back and the facsimile signature of the original player on the card face, distinguishing them from standard tournament-legal cards.
The art for this iteration of Counterspell is the classic illustration by Mark Poole, which first appeared in the Alpha set in 1993. Poole’s design, featuring a minimalist blue energy construct, became an iconic visual shorthand for the control archetype in Magic: The Gathering. While the 1998 World Championship version was intended for casual play and as a collectible memento of professional history rather than for competitive tournament use, it remains a sought-after piece for players who appreciate the preservation of championship-level deck lists from the late nineties.
