Provenance

Where it came from

Bone Shredder was originally released in the 1998 Urza's Legacy expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Designed by Mike Elliott, the creature represents the Phyrexian influence within the set's narrative, specifically as an assassin construct. The card became a staple in tournament play due to its efficient 'echo' mechanic, which balanced a powerful enter-the-battlefield removal effect with a recurring mana cost that challenged players' resource management.

The card was later included in 'The List', a curated selection of reprints integrated into set boosters beginning in 2020. This program was designed to introduce iconic or mechanically significant cards from the game's history to modern audiences. By including the original Urza's Legacy art by D. Alexander Gregory, Wizards of the Coast preserved the aesthetic of the late 90s era, which focused on the industrial and biomechanical horror themes central to the Urza block.
