Where it came from
Bone Shards, numbered 27 in the Modern Horizons 2 Art Series, is a premium promotional card featuring a full-bleed illustration from the set's namesake reprint. The card was produced by Wizards of the Coast for inclusion in the Modern Horizons 2 product line, which was designed to introduce cards directly into the Modern format while celebrating the history and flavor of Magic: The Gathering through nostalgic call-backs and updated mechanics.
The artwork for this piece was created by the artist Daarken, known for a dark, visceral aesthetic that aligns with the card's theme of sacrifice and death magic. The Art Series cards were intentionally produced as non-playable, collectible portraits, stripping away the rules text and card frames to focus entirely on the digital illustration. These cards were received by collectors as a distinct way to appreciate the visual artistry of the set, offering a gallery-like presentation of the game's expansive fantasy world.
