Bone Shards // Bone Shards

Bone Shards, numbered 27s in the Modern Horizons 2 Art Series, was released by Wizards of the Coast in 2021 as part of a specialized subset of cards designed to highlight the illustrative talent behind the set. This specific card showcases the distinct, grim aesthetic of the original Bone Shards card found in the main set, bringing the tactile, often dark fantasy art style to the forefront in a collectible, non-gameplay format that allows fans to appreciate the high-resolution artwork without the clutter of card text or frame borders.

The art featured on this card is credited to the illustrator Bryan Sola, who has become a prominent name for his moody and textured depictions of fantasy tropes. In this series, the focus was placed on the interplay between the visceral subject matter—the bone fragments—and a haunting lighting scheme that underscores the card's theme of sacrifice and death magic. The Art Series received a warm reception among collectors who appreciate the archival quality of the prints and the opportunity to focus exclusively on the visual narrative that defines the modern Magic: The Gathering aesthetic.
