Boom // Bust is a split card originally released in the 2007 Planar Chaos expansion, later reprinted with updated aesthetics in the 2021 Time Spiral Remastered set. The card was designed as part of a cycle of split cards intended to provide flexible, high-impact effects for red and white mana, reflecting the chaotic, time-shifted philosophy of its parent set. By offering a low-cost land destruction effect on one side and a sweeping board wipe on the other, the card was crafted to serve as both an early-game disruption tool and a late-game finisher.

The card features an illustration by Dan Dos Santos, who utilized a bold, painterly style to capture the destructive forces implied by the card's name. Within the context of Magic: The Gathering, the design was aimed at players looking for aggressive utility, and it became a notable, albeit divisive, element of competitive play due to the raw efficiency of its land destruction component.
