Where it came from
Teferi, Mage of Zhalfir was originally introduced in the 2006 Time Spiral expansion, a set designed to evoke the history of Magic: The Gathering by featuring mechanics and characters from the game's past. The card depicts Teferi, a central figure in the game's lore who is known for his mastery over time and phase manipulation. Mechanically, the card was designed to influence the flow of play by granting creatures flash and restricting when opponents can cast spells, reflecting Teferi's role as a character who dictates the pace of events.
The version from Time Spiral Remastered, released in 2021, maintains the iconic illustration by artist Aleksi Briclot. Briclot's design emphasizes Teferi's regal and scholarly presence, utilizing deep blues and intricate detailing to represent his connection to time magic. This reprint was curated to celebrate the most influential cards of the original Time Spiral block, remaining a staple for players who value control-oriented strategies and lore-rich card designs.
