Brawn first appeared in the Judgment expansion for Magic: The Gathering in 2002, serving as part of a cycle of legendary Incarnation creatures that granted static abilities to all creatures the controller owned while in the graveyard. This specific iteration is from the 2018 Commander Anthology Volume II, a curated collection designed to provide players with access to popular preconstructed decks from previous years. The set was created by Wizards of the Coast to address the secondary market demand for out-of-print, high-utility cards often sought after by the growing Commander player base.

The artwork for this card was rendered by Matt Cavotta, a long-time contributor to the game whose distinct, expressive style often leaned into the visceral nature of the creatures he illustrated. By depicting Brawn as a hulking, primal force of nature, Cavotta effectively communicated the card's mechanical function of granting trample to a player's army.
