Brawn

Brawn was released in 2002 as part of the Judgment expansion, the third and final set in the Odyssey block for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. During this period, the game designers focused heavily on the mechanics of the graveyard, encouraging players to utilize their discarded cards as a resource rather than viewing them as lost material. Brawn was designed to embody this philosophy by granting all creatures a player controls the trample keyword as long as it resides in the graveyard, providing a persistent strategic advantage even after the creature itself has been removed from play.

The card’s visual identity was brought to life by artist Matt Cavotta, a prolific contributor to the game during the early 2000s. Cavotta aimed to illustrate the raw, primal essence of strength, depicting the creature as a physically imposing, muscular figure that reflects the card's namesake ability. Upon its release, the card became a staple for green-aligned decks that focused on self-milling and graveyard synergy, earning a reputation among players for its simple yet effective utility in competitive and casual formats alike.
