Where it came from
Break Ties was released in 2021 as part of the Modern Horizons 2 expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set was designed to introduce cards directly into the Modern format, drawing heavily from the game's long history while iterating on classic mechanics. This particular card was crafted to serve as a versatile utility spell, offering players the ability to interact with artifacts, enchantments, or creatures in a single package, reflecting the set's focus on high-power, modular gameplay.
The card features illustration by artist Simon Dominic, who utilized a clean, stark aesthetic to highlight the act of breaking magical threads or tethers. The design team focused on creating a white-aligned removal spell that felt balanced yet impactful within the high-speed environment of Modern, prioritizing flexibility over pure efficiency. Upon its release, it was noted by players for its ability to address common threats, earning its place as a reliable tool in various white-based control and midrange deck archetypes.
