Where it came from
Underworld Hermit was released in 2021 as part of the Modern Horizons 2 expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set was designed to introduce cards directly into the Modern format, drawing heavily on the game's deep history and mechanics. The card itself embodies the Golgari aesthetic of the Ravnica setting, focusing on the intersection of life and death, represented by its ability to create Squirrel tokens when it enters the battlefield.
The artwork for the card was created by illustrator Randy Vargas. Tasked with visualizing a figure who serves as a bridge between the living forest and the realm of the dead, Vargas utilized a muted, earthy palette to emphasize the creature's connection to decay and growth. Upon release, the card was well-received by players for its synergy with token-based archetypes and its flavor-rich representation of classic Magic creature types.
