Where it came from
The Breakthrough card from the 2002 World Championship Decks represents a unique artifact from the early competitive era of the Pokémon Trading Card Game. These decks were produced by Wizards of the Coast to replicate the exact lists used by finalists at the 2002 World Championships, offering players a way to own and study the high-level strategies that dominated tournament play that year.
The card itself features the signature of the player who utilized it in their championship deck, serving as both a game piece and a commemorative memento. The design aesthetic is consistent with the Neo Genesis expansion, utilizing the original layout and illustration style defined by the game's early artists. While standard versions of this card were widely accessible, these championship-stamped versions are distinct for their gold-bordered design and the deck-specific back printing, which clearly marks them as distinct from standard competitive play cards.
