Where it came from
Breakthrough was originally introduced as a rare card in the Torment expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game, released in February 2002. As part of the Odyssey block, it reflects the set's mechanical focus on the graveyard, allowing players to draw cards and then discard them to manipulate their resource pool. The card was designed by the Wizards of the Coast development team to provide blue decks with an efficient way to filter their hands and set up graveyard-based strategies.
The card features artwork by the illustrator Arnie Swekel, who contributed numerous pieces to the game during this era. His design utilizes the gothic, atmospheric aesthetic characteristic of the Torment set, which was themed around the dark, subterranean world of the plane of Otaria.
