Provenance

Where it came from

Breakthrough was originally introduced in the Odyssey set in 2002, designed as an efficient blue spell that allowed players to discard their hand to draw four cards, facilitating graveyard-based strategies. The card embodies the mechanics of the Odyssey block, which focused heavily on the interaction between the library, the hand, and the graveyard, reflecting a period in Magic: The Gathering history where players were encouraged to view their discard pile as a secondary resource.

The Double Masters 2022 version, numbered 41, features updated artwork by artist Dmitry Burmak. This printing was part of a premium set designed to provide players with access to desirable reprints, often featuring stylized or alternate treatments. The card remains a niche but respected tool in older formats like Legacy and Vintage, where its ability to manipulate cards in hand and graveyard quickly is valued by combo-oriented archetypes.
