Breeding Pool was originally introduced in the 2005 set Ravnica: City of Guilds as part of a cycle of dual lands representing the ten guilds of the plane. This specific version hails from the 2019 set Ravnica Allegiance, which returned to the plane of Ravnica to highlight the remaining five guilds, including the Simic Combine. These lands are iconic for their ability to provide two different colors of mana while maintaining a unique mechanic that requires a player to pay life to have them enter the battlefield untapped, balancing their power with a cost.

The artwork for this particular iteration was created by Ravenna Tran, who brought a signature biological and surreal aesthetic to the Simic guild's territory.
