Where it came from
Breeding Pool was originally released in the 2005 expansion Dissension as part of the Ravnica: City of Guilds block, designed to provide a unique dual-land mechanic for the Simic Combine guild. The card allows players to tap for green or blue mana, with the caveat of paying two life to have it enter the battlefield untapped, a design intended to balance efficient mana fixing with a meaningful life-total trade-off.
For the 2013 Gatecrash set, the card was reprinted as part of a cycle of shock lands, featuring new artwork by illustrator Mike Bierek.
