Provenance

Where it came from

Bribery first appeared in the 1997 Mercadian Masques expansion for Magic: The Gathering, designed by Richard Garfield. The card was created to provide blue decks with a unique method of interacting with an opponent's library, allowing a player to search for and steal a creature card to place directly onto the battlefield. This design was intended to reward deep knowledge of opponent archetypes and force players to anticipate potential threats from across the table.

The Eighth Edition printing, released in 2003, served as a foundational core set that introduced a modern frame design for the game. Featuring artwork by Greg Staples, this version updated the visual aesthetic while maintaining the card's original strategic function. It was generally received as a powerful, albeit polarizing, tool in casual and commander-style formats, known for its ability to turn an opponent's own win conditions against them.
