Where it came from
Bribery was released in 1999 as part of the Mercadian Masques expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The set drew thematic inspiration from mercantile themes and the aesthetic of Renaissance-era exploration, departing from the high-fantasy tropes of preceding expansions to focus on the political intrigue of the plane of Mercadia.
The card’s illustration was created by artist Brian Snoddy, whose work captured the clandestine and manipulative essence of the game’s mechanics. Upon its release, the card became a significant element within the competitive landscape, praised for its unique ability to disrupt opponent strategies by searching their library for a creature card and putting it directly onto the battlefield under the player's control.
