Where it came from
Brisela, Voice of Nightmares was released in the 2016 Magic: The Gathering set Eldritch Moon. This card is a meld card, a unique mechanic introduced in the set where two specific cards—Gisela, the Broken Blade and Bruna, the Fading Light—physically flip and combine on the battlefield to form one massive creature. The design represents the horrific transformation of two angels into a single, corrupted entity under the influence of the Eldrazi titan Emrakul.
The card features artwork by Clint Cearley, who was tasked with illustrating the grotesque fusion of the two formerly angelic figures. The design aesthetic intentionally clashes the serene, holy imagery of Innistrad’s angels with the unsettling, fleshy, and multi-limbed nature of the Eldrazi infection. Upon release, the card was received as a technical marvel of physical card design, widely praised by the player base for how effectively the dual-sided art captured the terrifying narrative of the set.
