Provenance

Where it came from

Brontotherium was released in 2003 as part of the Legions set, the second expansion in the Onslaught block for Magic: The Gathering. The set was designed to focus heavily on creature-based combat, marking a shift in the game's development philosophy toward a more aggressive, minion-centric playstyle. As a member of the Beast tribe, the card reflects the thematic emphasis on primitive and prehistoric aesthetics that characterized much of the block's creature design.

The card was illustrated by Carl Critchlow, a long-time contributor to the game known for his distinctively bold, graphic style. Critchlow was tasked with depicting the massive, rhino-like mammal in a way that conveyed both its bulk and the tribal synergy mechanics inherent to the set. Upon its release, the card was received as a solid, functional piece of limited gameplay, valued for its straightforward power and ability to bolster the beast-themed decks common during that era.
