Where it came from
Brokkos, Apex of Forever was released in 2020 as part of the Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set focused on a plane dominated by gargantuan monsters, featuring mechanics centered on mutation and hybrid creature types. This specific promo card was distributed through Wizards of the Coast’s promotional channels, often appearing as a non-foil or foil variant used to incentivize participation in prerelease events or store-level tournaments during the launch window.
The card features artwork by Wisnu Tan, who captured the creature’s chimeric nature—a blend of nightmares and natural predatory elements. As an Apex creature within the game’s narrative, Brokkos represents a relentless, recurring force, design-wise mirroring its ability to emerge from the graveyard. The reception was largely defined by its utility in the Commander format, where its ability to be cast from the graveyard as a mutation target made it a popular choice for graveyard-focused decks.
