Where it came from
Brokkos, Apex of Forever was introduced in the 2020 Magic: The Gathering set Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths. Designed as a flagship creature for the set, it embodies the plane's core theme of mutation and monstrous evolution. The card was crafted to showcase the new mutate mechanic, allowing players to overlay the creature onto others to combine their abilities, reflecting the set's narrative focus on the colossal, shifting beasts that inhabit the world.
The artwork was illustrated by Victor Adame Minguez, who sought to capture the fluidity and terrifying majesty of a nightmare entity. His approach emphasized a serpentine, chimeric form that felt both ancient and alien, perfectly aligning with the design team's goal to make Brokkos feel like an apex predator of the wilderness. Upon release, the card was well-received by players for its unique aesthetic and its strategic versatility in Commander formats.
