Where it came from
Brush Off was released in 2021 as part of the Strixhaven: School of Mages expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Set within the multiversal university of Strixhaven, the card features the Silverquill college, which focuses on the magic of eloquence, ink, and shadow. Mechanically, the card serves as a thematic representation of a student using their mastery over ink to dismiss an opponent, embodying the witty yet biting nature of the Silverquill mages.
The card’s artwork was illustrated by Livia Prima, who contributed to the set's high-fantasy aesthetic that blended academic regalia with magical combat. Prima’s design centers on the visual motifs of swirling black ink and stylized calligraphy that define the Silverquill identity. Upon its release, the card was noted for its utility in limited-format play, providing players with a flexible removal option that perfectly captured the scholarly, competitive spirit of the Strixhaven setting.
