Where it came from
Joined Researchers // Secret Rendezvous is a double-faced card released in the 2021 Magic: The Gathering set Secrets of Strixhaven, which served as a special expansion for the Strixhaven: School of Mages set. The card was designed as part of the Mystical Archive, a collection of 63 iconic instant and sorcery spells from across the game's history, reimagined with unique art styles inspired by the academic aesthetic of the Strixhaven setting.
The art for this specific card was commissioned to evoke the scholarly atmosphere of an elite magical university, emphasizing the themes of research, collaboration, and hidden knowledge central to the set's narrative. As part of a limited selection of chase cards found in booster packs, the Mystical Archive cards were well-received by the player base for their distinct visual departure from standard card frames, successfully bridging the gap between vintage card mechanics and the contemporary prestige-frame design aesthetic.
