Where it came from
Suspend Aggression was released in 2021 as part of the Magic: The Gathering set Strixhaven: School of Mages, a thematic expansion centered around a sprawling magical university. The card was designed as a thematic representation of the school's instructional approach, specifically fitting within the red mana color pie which emphasizes impulse, speed, and temporary bursts of power. By forcing a creature to attack, the card captures the aggressive, chaotic nature of red magic while serving as a tactical tool to disrupt an opponent's defensive strategy.
The artwork for the card was created by illustrator Randy Vargas. In designing the visual language for Strixhaven, artists were tasked with balancing high-fantasy wizardry with the aesthetic of an academic institution. Vargas utilized dynamic lighting and expressive character movement to depict the specific magical effect, aiming to convey a sense of forced, frantic motion that aligns with the card's mechanics. The piece was well-received by players for its clear visual storytelling and its effective integration into the set's broader academic motif.
