Where it came from
Builder's Bane was released in 1996 as part of the Mirage expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, Mirage was notable for being the first set designed specifically to be played as a self-contained limited environment. The card was intended to serve as a hate card against artifact-heavy strategies, punishing players for the presence of artifacts in play by dealing damage based on their number.
