Provenance

Where it came from

Seeds of Innocence was released in 1996 as part of the Mirage expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, this set was notable for being the first to be designed as a standalone environment that did not require cards from previous expansions to function, marking a shift in the game's expansion philosophy.

The card's illustration was crafted by artist Anson Maddocks, one of the original illustrators for the game. Maddocks utilized his signature surreal and organic aesthetic to depict the card’s effect, which forces players to sacrifice land for life. The design reflects the thematic focus of the Mirage set, which drew heavy inspiration from African folklore and geography, moving away from the European high-fantasy tropes that dominated the game’s earlier iterations.
